High 5 Labs specializes in cannabis lab distillation products proudly made in the USA. Their top-of-the-line quality glass products are made by a second-generation glass blower. High 5 Labs is quickly changing the game in the cannabis industry, due to their specialized process of short path distillation, SPD.
What is short path distillation?
A technique for extraction/purification to achieve the purest form of a substance. So how are High 5 Labs using this for the cannabis industry? They are extracting oil from the plants, then refining the oil to achieve the highest possible quality.
*In no way does this alter or change the chemical compounds found in the plant but simply separates the elements by vaporizing them until only the oil is left.
Wondering what High 5 Labs can offer you?
They sell a variety of different SPD kits depending on the needs of their consumers, their most popular kit is the 12-litter wide bore. Let’s take a look at what is included:
- 12-litter mantle
- 1000ml flask
- Mono cow with take-off adapter
- 12-litter boiling flask
- 100mm hi-speed head
- Condenser path
- Cold trap
- Spin and temp controller
- Temperature probe
- 3 beakers and wrench PTF plug
- Two KF-25 clamps
- O-rings
The biggest key to successful distillation is the vacuum seal. High 5 Labs’ kits provide this by using Viton O-rings that resist chemical eroding and ensure tight fits, which eliminate the need for vacuum grease. Wondering why this is so important? O-rings along with the take-off adapter allows the user to remove the collection flask without breaking the vacuum seal. A far superior design when compared to in-line designs, which opens up the possibility of reverse contamination.
The cold traps are especially important for High 5 Labs’ kits for numerous reasons. Cold traps are devices that condense vapers, except for permanent gases, into liquid or solid states
This prevents vapors from entering into the vacuum pump where they could settle and cause contamination.
For vacuum pumps that require oil, cold traps are used to collect solvent vapors.
- This prevents the vapers from entering into the pump’s oil.
- If corrosive or water vapors collect in the pump oil, it could cause damage and lead to unpreparable pumps.
For non-oil-based pumps, the vapor collection is important to ensure a closed system. This means preventing vapors from passing through the vacuum pump, so they are not released into the environment.
During the evaporation process, the cold trap is the coldest spot on the system. Naturally attracting vapors to the coldest place, freezing and trapping them in the condenser. Vapors then cannot condense inside the vacuum tubing, leading to an increase in evaporation rates.
The cold trap can hold over 10lbs of dry ice and contain vapor in a cloud around the bottom of the trap. How amazing!

"When we started our licensed manufacturing company there were few choices and very little in the way of help. After utilizing many other SPD heads and peripherals, while observing the behavior of vapor under vacuum, we came up with several of our own designs. By reducing variety and standardizing on the most fluid designs we are now able to stock inventory. We are here to help with set up, training and compliance objectives."
