Virginia Cannabis Package and Label Laws and Requirements

On April 21, 2021, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed a bill legalizing recreational marijuana use in the state. The law will go into effect on July 1, 2021, making Virginia the 16th state in the United States to legalize cannabis for adult use.

The law allows for the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for those 21 years of age or older. It also establishes a regulatory framework for the cultivation, manufacture, and retail sale of marijuana and provides for the expungement of certain prior marijuana convictions.

As for packaging and labeling requirements, the Virginia Board of Pharmacy has yet to issue regulations specific to cannabis. However, it is likely that they will follow the general guidelines established in other states where cannabis is legal. These guidelines typically require child-resistant packaging and clear labeling that includes the product name, potency, ingredients, and warning statements. Click here to view our cannabis packaging.

It is important to note that while cannabis is now legal for adult use in Virginia, there are still restrictions on where it can be consumed. It is illegal to smoke or consume marijuana in public places, and employers can still prohibit the use of marijuana by their employees.

In conclusion, Virginia has recently legalized recreational marijuana use, and the regulations regarding packaging and labeling requirements are still being developed. As the state moves forward with implementation, more specific guidelines may be issued by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
